Let's Grooming

Let's Grooming

Intro

Inspired by Norman Mailer’s The Faith of Graffiti, which describes graffiti as the circulation of a name through public space, the work translates this idea into a different system. Instead of written names, the project uses repeated visual frames derived from footage of cats grooming each other, a behavior that can signal submission and hierarchy in animal social structures.

I used a video of my cats grooming, not as something cute, but as a repetitive behavior. I turned the video into halftone frames, printed them, and placed them around Savannah. I documented each one and removed them afterward, so nothing stayed in the space. Finally, I brought everything back together as an animation.
